Provides leadership, direction and accountability to the Operations Team to successfully oversee all aspects of the high quality production of wire and wire products, including welded wire reinforcement, in the Calgary, Alberta manufacturing facility of Tree Island Steel.



  • Demonstrates operational excellence in the management of production, manpower planning, continuous improvement, quality assurance, maintenance, safety, shipping, inventory, receiving and warehouse functions.
  • Ensures workplace compliance to all regulations, laws and management systems requirements.
  • Ensures the continued development and management of plant safety programs and compliance with all applicable WCB Alberta requirements.  Supports the promotion of safe behaviours in the workplace.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to support a harassment free workplace and ensures appropriate actions taken when issues arise.
  • Fosters positive labour relations between the company and bargaining unit.
  • Promotes and ensures a clean and organized workplace environment.
  • Promotes a culture that encourages teamwork and achievement combined with a sense of empowerment and accountability.
  • Leads and supports communications within area of responsibility and ensures employees are informed as to company/division plans and progress.
  • Acts as a mentor and strong leader with the ability to motivate and achieve outstanding results from team members.
  • Manages objectives to ensure operating budgets, capital plans, cost savings, production, quality and other performance targets are met.
  • Acts as a change agent by leading continuous process improvement.
  • Ensures that products and services meet all quality standards and specifications.
  • Promotes and ensures the establishment and maintenance of standardized best practices within the Operations division.
  • Identifies and justifies capital expenditures.
  • Supports the management and development of subordinate staff.
  • Provides performance feedback and oversees the development goals and objectives as part of performance review process.
  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, succession planning, assigning and directing work, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and problem resolution.



  • A minimum of 10 years of operational experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 5 years in a management role providing strong leadership and significant budgetary responsibilities.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering preferred.
  • Strong labour relations background with experience managing production staff in a unionized environment.
  • Ability to recruit, develop, motivate and manage personnel to balance staffing strength with profitability and growth.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing concepts with a demonstrated ability to establish and foster a continuous improvement culture.
  • Knowledge of Alberta OHS and WCB Alberta regulations, driving an ongoing safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of MRP based production planning and inventory control systems in an integrated computer environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and planning skills.
  • High degree of personal and professional ethics.
  • Excellent computer skills.

This position may require some travel, domestic and international.
